Cause now known – U1 fire: that’s why “Silver Arrow” went up in smoke

Date:

The fire on a special U1 train led to days of chaos on public transport in Vienna. Six Wiener Linien employees were injured. It is now known what caused the “Silver Arrow” to go up in smoke…

The fire broke out on November 19 in the middle of a special train with six carriages – without passengers. We narrowly missed a disaster that would have been unthinkable if the train had been fully occupied during rush hour…

A defect in the power cable led to a fire
On Tuesday, Wiener Linien finally announced that they had now discovered why the ‘Silver Arrow’ went up in smoke. It was important, it was emphasized, that this was not a “systemic error” but rather an isolated case.

The fire was caused by an electrical fault near the power cables leading to the traction motors. Damage to the insulation of the main power cables led to a short circuit and then to a fire.

Trains of the same type were checked
For the Wiener Linien, safety has the highest priority, it continued: “That is why all trains of this type have already been checked in the right places. The investigation showed that there was no systematic error.”

Nevertheless, a close inspection of the affected components would be part of future maintenance. The ‘Silver Arrows’ have been in use for more than 30 years, the affected train was 31 years old and had traveled 2.5 million kilometers without major incidents, according to Wiener Linien.
