The Constitutional Court’s decision to lift the ban on Good Friday events in Carinthia is causing a stir. Arguing that this law, which has existed since 1955, is not constitutional, restrictions on Christmas Eve or Sunday openings could also be brought into question again.
The Carinthian Events Act of 1955 was a thorn in the side of the Constitutional Court after a complaint from a cultural association from Villach. Last year he had to pay a fine of 400 euros because he organized a concert with two music groups on Good Friday and was ‘arrested’ by the police. Because §8 paragraph 3 prohibits events on Good Friday in Carinthia out of respect for the religious significance of the day of the death of Jesus Christ – and also on December 24!
