In Nice, some kindergarten and school canteens served food with wine. “I complained then, but it happened again,” criticized the father of a three-year-old daughter. The city council is trying to reassure people: it’s all about the taste, the alcohol completely evaporates during long cooking.
“These dishes are therefore safe for small children,” according to the city council. But that is not what father Marc is about. The 51-year-old replied that he did not understand why children were given meals with wine as a flavor enhancer. He became aware when he was browsing through the menus in the canteens last year.
He subsequently complained, but on December 10 a beef dish with organic white wine was served again. The city emphasized that it attaches great importance to high-quality school meals and that the menus are composed by a nutritionist, even under the supervision of a pediatrician.
Reactions to the father’s complaint vary, but it certainly sparked controversy. “I never put wine in my children’s stews,” said a French woman. That’s shocking. “I’ve never read or seen that there is any other way to make a good sauce,” said another.
“You worry about white wine in a ragout, but not about giving your children products that are saturated with sugar and fats,” complained another.
