A national alarm has been raised in Ukraine due to heavy Russian missile and drone attacks. Russian Tu-95 MS fighter jets fired numerous cruise missiles at Ukraine over the Black Sea. During the Christmas festivities, measures have been taken to limit electricity consumption.
“The enemy is once again attacking the energy system en masse,” Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook.
Also wounded in Kharkov
The city of Kharkiv was also under heavy rocket fire, wounding at least four people. They include a 39-year-old who was taken to hospital and two other victims who are in serious condition. In addition, one person was injured when a house was hit in another neighborhood.
“At least seven attacks”
“The Russian army carried out at least seven attacks,” Synyehubov wrote. Several fires have broken out and there has been damage to civil infrastructure. According to Mayor Terekhov, there was also an impact in the Kiev district of Kharkov. A fire broke out and the glazing of the surrounding buildings was damaged.
Measures to limit electricity consumption
Explosions were also reported in the major city of Dnipro, according to the Ukrinform agency. As a result of the ongoing massive rocket fire, measures have been taken to limit electricity consumption in Ukraine, Ukrinform reported, citing electricity grid operator Ukrenerho.
Zelensky: “Christmas unites all Ukrainians”
“For the second time we celebrate Christmas on the same day as one big family, one country. For the second time in modern history, Christmas unites all Ukrainians. Today we stand side by side. And we will not be forgotten,” Ukrainian President Zelenskyi said on December 24 on X (see message above).
Western style Christmas celebrations
The new Russian attack shocked the country’s Christmas celebrations. In Ukraine, many people celebrated Christmas in Western style, following the example of the leaders who wanted to join the EU and NATO. The custom was introduced as part of the defensive campaign against Russia. Nevertheless, many people in Ukraine, according to a long tradition, continue to give each other presents under the Christmas tree on New Year’s Eve and celebrate Orthodox Christmas on the night of January 7 – as in Russia.
