A passenger plane with 67 residents on board crashed today near the airport in the city of Aktau Kazakhstanon the shores of the Caspian Sea. According to Kazakh authorities, the deaths are at least 39 and 28 are said to have survived. “From the plane crash site, 28 people with various injuries were transferred to Mangistau Regional Hospital in Aktau,” health sources said.
The damaged aircraft is a company Embraer 190 Azerbaijani airlinesthat was on its way from Baku to Grozny, the capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya.
According to the crisis agency operating at the scene of the tragedy, “the crew sent a distress signal at 08:35 local time (03:35 GMT) and reported a malfunction in the control system (…) Then at 08:49 they requested an emergency landing in Aktau and tried to do it in direct mode. However, at 09:28 the plane crashed into the ground.”
Azerbaijan Airlines noted that the first research They suggest that the accident could have been caused by the plane’s collision with a flock of birds. “It was a regular flight. It was supposed to fly to Grozny, but because of the fog they sent it to Makhachkala and from there apparently to Aktau,” a spokesperson explained.
Most of the passengers were citizens of Azerbaijan.
