On Christmas Day, incredible scenes took place in the so-called “Madlochkompression” in Lech am Arlberg. Several skiers were involved in a pile-up and piste hooligans also torpedoed the work of the emergency services. Five people were injured, one of them very seriously.
On Christmas Day, the legendary “Madloch” opened for the first time this winter – and the start couldn’t have been worse. As is known, there is a small counter slope in the first third of the ski route, which unnecessarily tempts many skiers to go too fast. For this reason, two large banners have been placed warning people to be careful and drive at an appropriate pace. But apparently very few people adhere to it, as Wednesday’s events showed.
Woman hit several times, man seriously injured
It all started when a skier fell around 1:25 p.m. A 47-year-old woman following him had to brake lightly. She was literally ‘shot’ by an unknown skier wearing a red winter coat. The woman fell and was left behind a hilltop. A few seconds later, a 19-year-old winter sports enthusiast collided with the injured holidaymaker. The young woman also fell heavily and remained lying next to the 47-year-old on the slope. Immediately afterwards the next speeder came rushing in; he hit both women and fell, sustaining serious injuries. After initial treatment on site, the man had to be flown to Feldkirch State Hospital with the Gallus 1 emergency medical helicopter.
Piste hooligan crashes into rescue workers
What happened next makes you shake your head in disbelief. Although the slope rescuers who arrived on the scene had already marked and secured the accident site from afar, countless skiers still thundered down the slope at far too high speeds.
A piste hooligan crashed straight through the barrier and mowed down one of the piste rescuers – who was lucky to be unharmed. However, the piste hooligan had an unpleasant aftermath; he was reported to the Feldkirch Public Prosecutor’s Office for endangering physical safety. The man also fell and suffered unknown injuries.
