Syria’s new rulers have arrested a general believed to be responsible for numerous death sentences in the infamous Saidnaya prison. He is said to have headed the Syrian military prison from 2011 to 2014. An estimated 30,000 people have been imprisoned since then. Many of them are still missing.
The arrest took place on Thursday. General Mohammed Kanjo Hassan was head of military justice under Assad and is said to have been responsible for numerous death sentences. The Association of Prisoners and Missing Persons of Saidnaya Prison (ADMSP) estimates that 30,000 people have been held in the military prison since 2011. Only about 6,000 of them have been released so far.
Family members: “I want the truth”
Nearly three weeks after the fall, relatives gathered in Damascus to make the new leadership aware of the fate of the missing persons. Many desperately held up photos of their relatives. “I don’t want an unknown grave for my son, I want the truth,” read one poster. “Discovering the fate of the disappeared is a right,” read another.
The protesters also demanded that those responsible be held accountable. She is doing everything she can to find the remains of her cousin, who was kidnapped in 2012, says 28-year-old protester Amani el-Hallak. He studied dentistry and was taken by Assad’s henchmen when he left university. “They ripped out his fingernails and he died instantly.”
Yussef al-Sammaui also wants to know what happened to his cousin. The Syrian, who returned from Germany after the change of power in his home country, holds in his hands the portrait of his cousin, who was tortured to death in the regime’s dungeons in 2012.
Dissidents murdered
Fighters led by the Islamist HTS militia captured Damascus on December 8, ending Assad’s decades-long rule in Syria. He fled to Russia. Assad is accused of kidnapping, torturing and killing dissidents.
