According to a recent survey, support for EU membership among the Austrian population has fallen to 60 percent. This is the second lowest figure since accession in 1995. At the same time, the share of those in favor of leaving the EU rose to 25 percent. What advantages and disadvantages do you personally see in our EU membership? Feel free to join the discussion about this!
Despite the alarming number, it also appears that identification with Europe has increased, although many see the EU itself as weak and insecure. Commonly perceived disadvantages include the high costs associated with the amounts added to the EU budget or the limitation of sovereignty. The issue of migration and what is perceived as excessive bureaucracy is also a thorn in the side of many. This is offset, for example, by the economic boom due to the free movement of goods, Austria’s financial support through EU funding and projects, political participation and of course the freedom to travel.
How do you see Austria’s accession to the EU today? What has changed in your daily life as a result? Which advantages and disadvantages play the greatest role for you personally? And what do you think needs to change so that our country’s EU membership is viewed more positively?
