Chimney sweep reveals – ‘It happens that people open the door naked’

Date:

On New Year’s Eve, chimney sweeps are given away as good luck charms. We met a living man who is enthusiastic about the ‘good’ things and tells curiosities.

“Kron”: Being a chimney sweep is not exactly a job you dream of as a child. What motivated you to do this?
Kurt Habacht: It wasn’t originally my dream job, but my father was a chimney sweep and was always enthusiastic about the ‘good’ profession, so it was only logical that I followed him.

What do you mean by ‘good’ business? Will you get rich in this business?
I wouldn’t say rich, but it is a safe job that allows you to earn a good income.

Some people are surprised at the high costs for what is often only a short visit from you.
I do not determine the prices, but the responsible authorities. The rate level is renegotiated annually.

Apart from the financial aspect, have you ever regretted your job choice?
No, I like my job, even though I now spend more time in the office than curling up on my hands and knees in front of the fireplace.

Crawling?
Yes, it was common in the past to crawl into chimneys, but in newer buildings this is often no longer necessary.

Is that where the soot all over your body comes from?
Yes, you get dirty at work, that’s part of it.

Especially intimidating for some women, right?
This may be the case now that more and more women are entering the profession. A quarter of the students are now women. In my role as state guild master, I feel the need to increase the proportion of women. I have already won two prizes for my efforts.

As a chimney sweep you go around house after house and apartment. Do you always receive a warm welcome?
Yes, most people are friendly, some are sleepy. In the past, you were often offered a cup of coffee or cake, but that is no longer the case.

Have you ever had any funny experiences with that?
Every now and then the door opens and a naked woman or man stands in front of you.

There is a superstition that chimney sweeps bring good luck. Is that correct? Naturally.
