In less than six weeks there were seven femicides (= murders of women) in Austria and one attempted murder of another woman. In total, 17 women have already been murdered by their partners or ex-partners this year – so Austria is again at the sad EU summit. Why do we have such a big problem and what can be done about it? Moderator Jana Pasching talks about this with the director of the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelter (AÖF), Maria Rösslhumer, in “Requested”.
In the past year, 2021, a total of 31 women have been murdered in this country, a staggering number: “The scale of violence against women is enormous,” says Rösslhumer, also citing the total of 63 murder attempts recorded last year. “In Austria, there is a really deep, patriarchal attitude towards women, a high level of misogyny, contempt for women, humiliation of women…” she says.
The director of AÖF cannot understand why there is still no “outrage” and why “a certain indifference has set in”: “We have good measures, but of course it is not progressing in terms of implementation and the seriousness of the problem.
