With seven, some serious, skiing accidents, the emergency services on the Tyrolean ski slopes had their hands full. Concussions, fractures and other injuries were commonplace. The emergency medical helicopters were also in constant use.
The emergency services in and around the Tyrolean ski areas needed good nerves on Sunday. There were countless accidents, collisions and injuries.
It all started with a violent collision in the Söll ski area. A 23-year-old German woman was on the red-marked slope No. 51 shortly after 10 a.m. and collided with a 51-year-old local woman. At that time, the woman was under a hill that was difficult to see.
The German was able to get up again after a few meters. The 51-year-old slid down about 100 meters and lay motionless. Several skiers provided first aid and alerted the rescue services. The local woman was flown to hospital with a suspected severe concussion and shoulder injury.
Fell into a stream without a helmet
A short time later, a crash also occurred in the Silvretta Arena ski area in Ischgl. There was a 15-year-old German girl traveling. Due to a driving error, her skis crossed above the Obere Velillalpe and she went over the left edge of the piste and ended up in the adjacent Velillalbach.
“The skier, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was rescued by the piste rescue team,” police said. She suffered significant injuries to her right thigh and was mildly hypothermic and was taken to the trauma department of a private clinic on the Idalpe.
Teenagers collided
The ski day for two young people in the Obergurgl ski area in Sölden also ended in hospital! Shortly before 11am, a 17-year-old German and a 16-year-old Briton collided on the blue-marked track number 6.
The collision caused them both to fall. The young German suffered significant injuries to his head, back and hip and was taken to Zams Hospital by the emergency medical helicopter “C5”. The Briton suffered injuries to his face and head. He was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck.
Suspected spinal fractures after a fall
An emergency helicopter also had to be deployed to the Axamer Lizum ski area. Two Germans collided shortly before 2 p.m. in the area of the transition to runway 3. A 50-year-old lost control while swinging to the right and crashed into a 60-year-old.
The woman suffered serious injuries and was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck with suspected spinal fractures. Fortunately, the 50-year-old was unharmed.
Children collided with fall victim
A nasty accident took place in the Patscherkofel ski area in Innsbruck around 3 p.m. A 24-year-old Albanian woman fell there after hitting an edge without any outside influence. Two skiers between the ages of ten and twelve used this hill as a ski jump.
Unfortunately, they did not see the woman and bumped into her. She broke her left forearm and a finger. “The boys initially stayed at the scene of the accident and asked the victim, but due to language barriers they drove on without leaving their personal details,” police said.
The seriously injured person was eventually treated by the pister rescue team and taken to hospital by ambulance. The police are now looking for the two skiers, who must report to the Hall in Tirol police station on 059133/7110.
With skis “screwed” into the safety fence.
A little later the next incident took place in the Hochzillertal ski area! There, a 16-year-old German may have lost control due to excessive speed in a left bend. He grabbed the safety fence with the tips of his skis and fell. He seriously injured his right shoulder and was flown by emergency helicopter to Schwaz district hospital.
Bad incident
An emergency helicopter also had to be deployed in the Schlick 2000 ski area to take an injured person to Hall State Hospital. A 56-year-old local woman tried to pass a skier on a flat stretch. However, she suddenly crossed the road and collided with the woman.
Both fell. The 56-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury. The second skier, a 22-year-old Chinese woman, suffered a significant knee injury.
