Heavy rain and storms caused flooding in the north of England on New Year’s Day. Several communities in Greater Manchester were flooded. In some cases, a month’s worth of rain fell, the BBC reported.
Flood warnings have been issued in more than 150 communities across the UK. Train connections had to be canceled and underpasses and highway sections were closed. Flooded streets also caused disruption to holiday traffic.
Police in Greater Manchester, the UK’s second most populous region, said dozens of people were trapped in homes and had to be evacuated, while others were rescued from cars stuck in the water.
According to the BBC, around 90mm of rain fell in the north-west of England in 24 hours, with some higher ground in North Wales and Cumbria recording more than 100mm.
