New year, new burglaries: the burglars who have been wreaking havoc in Vienna with corrosive nitric acid since 2022 also struck during the holidays. Three apartments – one each on Landstrasse, in Leopoldstadt and in Favoriten – were cleared of their valuables.
Burglaries involving poisonous and corrosive nitric acid have been preoccupying criminals in Vienna since 2022. The burglar gang also shamelessly took advantage of the holidays and the associated absence of many holidaymakers and tenants.
So it affected a total of three houses – sometime between December 23 and January 2. Two of them only surprise the researchers to a limited extent: just like in recent months, a house in the third district is again hit.
Doors marked, one apartment each cracked
In addition to the apartment at Modenapark, this also involved a house on Große Sperlgasse in Leopoldstadt and one on Neilreichgasse in Favoriten. In all three houses, investigators also found various markings with adhesive strips that the gangsters used to mark all the doors in a house.
Buildings from the 60s and 70s in sight
Striking: As noted in the autumn, all three homes were built in a similar year. Buildings from the 1960s and 1970s will probably increasingly come into the spotlight. As the “Krone” has learned, very little acid was used in the burglaries in Landstrasse and in Leopoldstadt. In Favoriten the damage to doors and floors is probably much greater.
Since 2022, 94 Viennese apartments have been squatted
In 2023, 21 apartments – most of them in the 3rd district – were squatted in this way and since 2022, 94 apartments in Vienna have probably been vacated by the perpetrators. In the meantime, the burglars usually leave for other European cities and move from house to house. However, the burglaries in Vienna have been going on continuously for several months and more coups are expected.
