The attempt to form a government has thus failed, leaving the ultranationalist FPÖ party in opposition, winner of the September 29 parliamentary elections in Austria, with 28.8% of the vote.
Austria’s acting Chancellor, the conservative Karl Nehammer, announced on Saturday that he will resign in the coming days, both as head of government and as president of the People’s Party (ÖVP), after the formation halted negotiations with the Austrian People’s Party. Social Democrats will form a new government.
“We are ending negotiations with the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party) and will not continue them,” Nehammer said in a message published on social networks, before announcing his intention to leave the positions he has held since December 2021.
