The Russian offensive on Russian territory near Kursk has been going on for five months. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, an important effect of the operation near Kursk is that Russia has moved its strongest units and soldiers from North Korea there.
“We are maintaining a buffer zone on Russian territory and actively destroying Russia’s military potential there,” Zelensky said in his evening video address. Russia has already lost 38,000 soldiers during the action and counter-offensive, of whom 15,000 were killed.
Independent verification of this figure was not possible because both warring sides did not report their own losses. “It is important that the occupying forces cannot now send all these troops to our other areas, especially not to the Donetsk region, especially against Sumy, especially to Kharkov or Zaporizhia,” Zelensky said.
The current situation in Eastern Ukraine was discussed at a meeting of the General Staff. According to Zelensky, the defense of the city of Pokrovsk on the edge of the Donbass needs to be strengthened. “The Pokrovsk attack was one of the hottest in the past four weeks,” said Viktor Trehubov, spokesman for the brigade of Ukrainian units fighting there. But the Russian attackers were unable to “achieve such a success that would allow them to directly threaten the city of Pokrovsk itself.”
Kiev is silent about Kurakhove
Zelensky made no mention of the situation at Kurakhove at all. According to the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, Russian troops have captured the strategically important town. This means that the most populous city in the southwestern Donbass region has been captured, the press release said. After the capture of Kurakhove, the Russian forces advanced into open maneuver areas. This makes it possible to increase the pace of conquering further territories.
There was no confirmation of this from the Ukrainian side. The General Staff in Kiev in its daily situation report reported further battles in the Kurachove region in the evening, but the battle areas mentioned were Slovyanka, Petropavlivsk and Dachne, already west of the town of Kurachove. The Russian airstrikes focused on the town of Andriivka, about ten kilometers away. It is currently unclear where the Ukrainian armed forces have set up the next line of defense.
The fighting for Kurachowe lasted about two months. The Ukrainians were able to hold the place longer than experts actually expected. Of the once 18,000 inhabitants, only a fraction remained behind. After the heavy fighting, much of the city is now just a pile of rubble. Moscow’s losses are considered high.

According to official information, six passengers on the bus were injured, including five women. A municipal employee was killed in the explosion.
A few hours earlier, a Russian combat drone seriously injured three police officers in the Kharkov region of eastern Ukraine. As regional military administrator Oleh Synjehubov reported, the police officers were attacked by a “Molniya-1” (Lightning) combat drone, which is made mainly of plywood.
