What really happened behind the doors of the failed candy coalition? One of the top negotiators and Viennese Deputy Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) openly speaks in the “Krone” interview about the last hours of the planned alliance with the ÖVP and SPÖ. More than 30 new Babler loads, why it probably would have worked with Doskozil and even Rendi-Wagner and your own mistakes. Question for Wiederkehr: And how will Kickl change the country?
“Kron”: Mr. Vice Mayor, I brought you a photo taken on December 20, 2024. The pink negotiating team marches to the coalition negotiations with the ÖVP and SPÖ. Everyone laughs, including you. Two weeks later, the NEOS broke off negotiations. What did you learn on day 96 after the elections that you didn’t know on day 83 about parties you have been working with for years?
Christoph Wiederkehr: I remember this day of the trial very clearly because it was one of the decisive days. Previously, some substantive progress was still possible, but on this day we saw that already established measures to consolidate the budget were fully reopened. So we were basically back to square one, and after that confidence was significantly lower.
In the seven-point statement on the negotiations, NEOS writes that SPÖ leader Andreas Babler was choleric during the negotiations and often announced that he would ‘blow everything up’. How did you experience him?
