After an attack on a 28-year-old ticket inspector in Graz, there are calls for better staff security: will all employees soon have a body camera?
On Thursday afternoon, a 28-year-old discovered how dangerous the job of a ticket inspector can be: on line 4 to Reininghaus he asked a 20-year-old passenger for his ticket. Both got off at Jauerburggasse. The drunken Grazer attacked the inspector and hit him in the head several times. He was slightly injured and had to be treated in the LKH.
The dodger tried to escape, but the police were able to arrest him. He is in Graz-Jakomini prison.
The aggression increases
The attack is a poorly isolated case, “madness,” says Alexander Lozinsek, director of the Graz Parking and Security Service (GPS). But it is also symptomatic of a development that Lozinsek observes with concern: “Unfortunately, we have to conclude that aggression, including verbal aggression, against our employees is increasing.” Physical attacks “don’t happen on a daily or even weekly basis,” but again.
That is why GPS is currently considering equipping all its employees with a body camera, i.e. a camera directly on the body. “This still needs to be clarified legally and with Holding Graz as a customer. But we hope someone will think twice before attacking an inspector.”
The police help with training
Most buses and coaches are equipped with cameras anyway and GPS employees are also trained by the police in de-escalation. “We will definitely improve our training when it comes to training,” says Alexander Lozinsek. “You have to know exactly how to respond correctly to aggression in a narrow bus.” What also concerns Lozinsek: “We receive a lot of emails that are often cross-border criminally relevant.”
