80-year-old missing – nighttime search for elderly person at minus ten degrees

Date:

It was a race against time in the current, bitterly cold temperatures: On Tuesday evening, the Tyrolean lowlands were searched for an 80-year-old who had not returned from a trip. Ultimately, it was tracks in the snow that led to the hypothermic man around midnight.

Around 8.15pm on Monday evening, relatives reported that the 80-year-old local resident was missing. The pensioner had left his apartment in Kolsassberg (Innsbruck-Land district) in the afternoon. He never came back. He was also unavailable.

Drones were used
Fire brigade, police and rescue services then started a major search operation. Drones were also used.

Tracks led to an alpine hut
After hours of searching in freezing temperatures, two firefighters finally discovered tracks in the snow leading to a mountain hut. Around midnight, the missing 80-year-old was found in an open room. At that moment it was almost minus ten degrees. The man was hypothermic, but otherwise apparently unharmed.

Large contingent of emergency services
Emergency services transported the elderly man to the valley, where he was taken to Hall Hospital for further medical evaluation. The Kolsassberg fire brigade, the Innsbruck professional fire brigade and the Swarovski company fire brigade were deployed with two drones, several police patrols including guide dogs and the rescue team.
