In Vorarlberg, a 20-year-old man from the Feldkirch district was blackmailed by a 27-year-old North German with nude photos and a relevant video. The 27-year-old had posed as a woman on social media last fall and came into contact with the victim, who, according to the police, transferred a total of six figures to the blackmailer with multiple payments. After the 20-year-old finally filed a complaint, the perpetrator was arrested.
The suspect is accused of other similar extortions in Greater Northern Germany. In this regard, the National Criminal Investigation Department in Vorarlberg advises to pay attention to security and privacy in online contacts and to be careful when it comes to sharing content: “Think first, then publish online”, according to the police.
Also, messages from strangers should be blocked or ignored, and one should be suspicious if someone tries to communicate on a platform other than the original one. Strange requests should be blocked and reported. A secure browser and strong passwords are also important.
According to the police, in the case of sexual blackmail, all communication must be cut off immediately and demands never met, i.e. no photos, videos or money are sent. The suspect’s name and username, all conversations and photo or video footage must be retained as evidence, the incident must be reported immediately to the authorities and the relevant online service.
