In the city of Salzburg, several Habsburg laundries have recently gone bankrupt. Customers of the last remaining dry cleaner of the same name were amazed. But the four branches still exist.
Martin Rauter is used to a lot. He’s seen a lot of dirty laundry over the decades. It’s his business. The 45-year-old runs four dry cleaners in the city of Salzburg and wants to open a fifth soon. However, recently his expansion course was suspended.
Last week, Habsburg Wascherei-Reinigung GmbH filed for bankruptcy in Salzburg. Even though the bankruptcy had no consequences for Rauter’s branches, he felt it. Because: His four laundry companies operate under virtually the same company name. However, Rauter operates the company as a sole proprietorship and not as a GmbH.
“People were queuing”
“Customers called us and asked what was going on,” says the Salzburg resident. “People were queuing at the Europark branch to get their clothes. They were afraid they wouldn’t get them anymore.” The laundry manager is convinced that the same name is the culprit.
In the 1990s, Habsburg laundries were still present in several cities in Austria. When the large chain had to close, employees took over individual locations. They all retained the Habsburg name in one way or another. In Salzburg alone there was a laundry Habsburg GmbH and a cleaning Habsburg GmbH. One closed a good year ago, the other three years ago. Now the two were followed by Habsburg Wascherei-Reinigung GmbH due to bankruptcy.
Martin Rauter, holder of the word and image rights for Habsburg Laundry and Cleaning, was involved in companies. He has been struggling with the risk of confusion and its consequences for years. “To this day, there is an incorrect print on our homepage. The provider refuses to change this, even though we are undoubtedly not the GmbH.”
But one thing is certain: Rauter is now the last remaining Habsburg in Salzburg.
