Lapid will lead Israel to new elections in November

Date:

The new elections are presented as a referendum on Netanyahu, who aims to return to government

Israel goes back to the polls on November 1. It will be his fifth election in just over three years. Parliament approved the dissolution shortly after Naftali Bennet formalized the transfer of power to his coalition partner Yair Lapid, who will combine the functions of Prime Minister and Head of Foreign Affairs.

End of a year of coalition government whose greatest success was the end of Benyamin Netanyahu’s 12 consecutive years in power and the approval of the budgets. The stark political differences within an alliance of forces with opposing tendencies, from ultra-nationalists to Islamists, passing through the left have not withstood the pressures of every voice in the room.

“I give you the holy staff and the responsibility of the State of Israel. I hope you protect him and that God protects you,” Bennet said at the handover ceremony, which also marks the end, at least temporarily, of his political career because he has decided not to run in the next election, but Lapid has responded by assuring that he hopes to “do the best he can for a Jewish, democratic, good and strong state”.

Israel has a new interim head of government pending elections that are again presented as a referendum on Netanyahu. After 12 months at the head of the opposition, the Likud leader is already immersed in the campaign and has declared that he is “the only alternative”! He promises ‘a strong, nationalistic and responsible government’.

The problem for Netanyahu is that the polls are again showing a very close score between his supporters and opponents, all pointing to the expansion of the political blockade. Another major inconvenience for the former Israeli politician, who has already turned 72, is the corruption process he has opened at the judiciary.
