The nightmare does not stop: after the devastating fire, California is preparing for the next catastrophe – now there may be floods.
The heaviest forest fires in California, including the “Eaton” and “Palisades” fires, have left catastrophic damage since the beginning of January. In total, more than 16,000 buildings were destroyed and the emergency services have so far discovered 28 victims in the ruins. But instead of a phase of the breath, the inhabitants of the region prepare for the next natural disaster: heavy rains.
A flood warning for the affected areas was declared during the weekend.
Burned soils increase the risk of flooding
The National Weather Service (NWS) emphasizes that the “fire strips” burned by the fires – burnt landscapes in which the soil can no longer absorb water – considerably increases the risk of flooding. “Although catastrophic sludge avalanches are not the most likely scenario, the risk is high enough to prepare for the worst case,” said meteorologists.
The emergency services work hard to secure endangered areas. But many fire zones are still closed.
