The water shortage in Cyprus increased further in the previous winter. It’s always raining, but it’s far from sufficient. Now the Ministry of Agriculture and the Water Works are alarm: the water reservoir lakes are only 25 percent filled, the prospects for the summer catastrophic, reports the Cypriot newspaper “Phileleftheros”. Two ways to improve the situation are discussed.
The Nikosia government is investigating the functioning of extra desalination systems in both the sea and on land. There are already five such plants that other mobile units on ships and loading ships can be used directly off the coast. Alternatively, systems on the couch can work near the sea.
Hardly a rainfall
The problem: the new facilities should be delivered as quickly as possible to be able to relax the situation completely. The government has put forward a tender that is mainly due to the speed of providing the systems; The cost and installation location is secondary, writes “Phileleftheros”.
In addition to the five desalination installations, Cyprus has merged 180 dams with the area of the country, more than any other EU country. But the precipitation has been falling sharply for years. According to the Cypriot waterworks, only about 25 million cubic meters flowed around the winter 23/24 – half as much as in winter.
Agriculture and tourism in danger
The chairman of the association of around 250 banana producers in Cyprus warns of catastrophic consequences for its members: now they could now hardly give their plants water, the entire harvest is in danger. Other farmers also complain about the bad conditions.
Tourism is also affected, such as recordings of the Mavrocolympos, reservoir near the West -Cypratic City of Paphos Show, which is considered a tourist stronghold. There, fate struck twice: on the one hand it wasn’t enough, on the other hand, a dam broke, so that even the last water was still absent.
In recent years, the local population, hotel and pension operators, but also tourists for the economy in water consumption were mentioned. That should be the case again this year. Cyprian meteorologists refer to climate change that worsens the situation.
Swimming pools possible with seawater
For tourists, the question is whether swimming pools will be filled in the future – some hotel operators are considering filling the swimming pools with seawater. That sounds simple, but the filter systems of the swimming pools are extremely influenced.
The residents, in turn, are anxiety measures such as in the water layer year from 2005 to 2007: At that time, people were no longer allowed to cum their cars during an extreme drought and no longer water the garden.
