A 34-year-old man was driving with three passengers in his car on the Rheintalautobahn at 6:52 am when he suddenly noticed the smell of fire in the car near Götzis’ driveway. The man responded immediately and steered the car into the emergency lane. All four occupants immediately got out and kept a safe distance. Shortly afterwards, the first flames erupted from the engine compartment. When the Hohenems fire brigade arrived, the car was already ablaze.
Praise for drivers
The extinguishing work was completed by 8.30am. Because the accident happened during rush hour, there was an immediate traffic jam of six kilometers. After the accident, the accident site was difficult to pass.
However, the rescuers had one word of praise for the drivers: the rescue lane would have worked perfectly – at least something. Fortunately no one was injured.
