In Mallorca, activists protest against rich people from abroad. They blame them for the high rental prices and the housing shortage. Protestgraffiti is now increasingly part of the cityscape.
On the enormous cult figure of a bull, for example, “rich buyers of foreign real estate – go to hell” (in the German “rich foreign real estate buyer – trip to hell”) can be read. The Osborne Bulls were set up in the 1950s as an advertisement for a Brandy brand throughout Spain, some were later dismantled. About 90 copies can still be seen nationwide today.
The local population mainly annoys the housing shortage that they attribute to the increase in holiday apartments. Last year there were always rallies in which tourists were also insulted and sprayed with water guns. The holiday guests are blamed for higher prices in restaurants, traffic jams, noise and dirt, for example.
Here you can see a photo of the protest.
Demonstration im April
Tourism is almost 14 percent of the gross domestic product in Spain. The share is considerably higher in some regions. It is around 35 percent in Mallorca and the remaining Balearic Islands.
Various organizations have called for protest demonstrations against the housing shortage throughout the country before 5 April.
