Ramadan started on Saturday for hundreds of millions of Muslims. In Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia, 1 March was the first day of Lent. During this time, believers make about 30 days without food and drink from sunrise to dusk.
The start of Ramadan depends on viewing the new moon (see photo above) and can therefore vary depending on the country. In Iran, where Schia is the second largest stream of Islam, Ramadan only starts on Sunday.
According to estimates, there are around 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide. Most of them live in Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In the Arab world there are the two most holy places of Islam in Saudi Arabia with Mecca and Medina.
About Ramadan’s fast month:
During Ramadan, Muslims break from sunset to sunset and break the fasting together with the so-called iftar meal (fasting fasting, comment) in the evening. Fasting must be positive in one’s own behavior and the conscious dedication to God, the focus on the essence in life and the improvement of the character.
Children, people with physical or intellectual disabilities, chronically ill and the elderly are freed from fasting. The overtaking of failed sober days – or are granted by Aalmoes – is allowed for anyone who is acute, traveling, pregnant and breastfeeding women, women in the puerperium or in menstruation.
These help rules are recorded in the Quran and in Islamic traditions. Incidentally, there is also no need for smoking, drinking and sexual intercourse.
