“The man with the golden arm” saved thousands of babies, including his grandchild. His life was insured with a million Australian dollars, so his blood was so valuable. 2.4 million children can be treated with his plasma. Even though he didn’t like needles!
“Once once” he watched when he stabbed that he could never have placed his needle phobia, despite thousands of blood donations.
“An hour of your time as a life for someone else”
But Harrison always thought: “The life you save could be yours and the hour of your time you sacrifice could mean a lifetime for another,” he said in an interview on the occasion of his 60th birthday of blood in 2023.
Harrison was born in 1936. At the age of 14 he needed a large amount of breast surgery – 13 liters! – Blood. As a “thank you” he decided to become a helper himself from the age of 18 – the then minimum age (see video above). Harrison held a message. He started donating in 1954.
Life -edging Serum developed
In 1966 it turned out that his blood contained unusually strong and persistent antibodies against the antigen of the Rhesus group D. Blood, which contains a high proportion of anti-D antibodies, can be processed in an immunoglobulin-basic products used to prevent the newborn (HDN) disease. His blood therefore contributed to the development of a life -saving serum, which protected millions of newborns against the intolerance into Rhesus.
And Harrison donated and donated. In 1163 donations he was taken from his right arm over the years, only ten of the other. So he came to his nickname “The man with the golden arm”.
“Hopefully a record will be broken”
Harrison took 40 minutes every three weeks until he was no longer allowed to donate because of age. The modest Australian says about his record: “This is the only record that I hope he will be broken.”
Harrison received the medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on 7 June 1999.
