In 2021 a pipe had fallen on a civil engineer from Lower Austria in a Kunette. Since then the young man has been parapegical. But compensation for his suffering could not come true. Also because the court has spent a lot of money in his trial for the preparation of expert reports.
Michael Neubauer is – in his wheelchair – in a garden in Lower Austria. His father brought him there because of the many thresholds, steps that can be overcome on the road there.
“Outside my own outside moving is only possible if I have no obstacles to cope,” says the 29-year-old, in an attempt to lead the coffee cup that stands for him and drinks.
He was buried under a pipe section
No, he doesn’t want him to be helped: “Because I have to stay as independent as possible.” In his fate to be parapegical. “From the breast area to the ends of the toe, I feel nothing”; The function of his arms and hands – also seriously limited.
His handicap: the result of an accident at work. It was done on November 25, 2021. The civil engineer was in a beer – “like thousands of times earlier” – to lay a pipe; When an excavator brought it to him, the vehicle got a tip, the part crashed, Michael Neubauer was buried under it. “After that I don’t know anything anymore …”
Until later, much later, he woke up in the Intensive Care unit of the Sankt Pölten Hospital and learned from doctors that the nerve strand between his 6th and 7th Thoracic vertebra was enormously damaged. “But I never lost my urge to life.”
The process lasted for years
For almost a year, the young man was intramural in rehabilitation clinics. To learn how to deal with his drama. Physically and mentally.
In the meantime, his parents have converted part of their house with people with disabilities, “she and my partner were always extremely involved”. And the state also takes care of him: “I have a help, I get a pension – and pay more therapies”.
However, the family has to pay many expensive purchases from its own pocket, such as a train device for his wheelchair, which gives him more independence that costs 8000 euros.
Amounts that the young man, as he initially thought, could pay – compensation for pain and suffering with him. The trial in this context lasted two years, countless reports were obtained, which consumed insurance cover, “because the court eventually came to the conclusion that I had acted negligently.”
Because he was unsecured in art. “One of my bosses had never told me it should be different. All my colleagues and I have always worked this way. Conclusion: Although Michael Neubauer has sustained his – serious – injuries in the exercise of his profession, he receives no compensation for this.
Now a donation account has been set for him: Dornbirner Sparkasse; IBAN: AT39 2060 2030 0003 3377. Password: “Michael”.
