So far, they have found six bodies, three people of Italian nationality and one of Czech descent. Authorities fear that not all victims can be identified as the avalanche of ice and rocks caused serious damage to the bodies.

Emergency services have searched the Marmolada Glacier, in the Italian Alps, all night to try to find some 17 people who are still missing in the area after Sunday’s detachment.
Local authorities have located at least six bodies, including those of three Italians and one of Czech descent, according to police sources. An ice rink in Canazei serves as a makeshift morgue.

Trento’s prosecutor Sandro Raimondi updated Monday’s casualties and also confirmed eight injured and 17 missing, according to ‘Il Corrierre della Sera’. A spokesman for the National Directorate of Alpine Rescue, Fabio Bristot, admitted on Sunday evening that “it will be difficult to find anyone alive”.
Search teams have used drones equipped with thermal cameras to try to locate the missing while families wait for news from the Dolomites, which have become the epicenter of the tragedy. Prime Minister Mario Draghi plans to travel to the area.
The researchers suspect that a serac, a block of ice in a glacier, broke loose and destroyed everything in its path, including entire groups of mountaineers. Authorities fear that not even all the victims can be identified, as the avalanche of ice and rocks caused serious damage to the bodies, the Rai chain reported.
Municipalities in the area have issued orders to avoid the affected area until searches are complete and the area is safe again.
