A pensioner in Knittelfeld is said to have used around eleven million liters of water from October 2023 to October 2024. The 68-year-old has to pay for more than 43,000 euros. The city is now looking for a solution to the problem.
On average, daily water consumption per person in Styria is 120 to 140 liters. According to reading the water meter, this daily consumption for the Murtaler is around 30,400 liters in the specified period. The pensioner could have filled nearly 74,000 bathtubs or 462 swimming pools with four by three times two meters. The issued water bill for 2024 is an incredible 43,494 euros.
Break or not?
For the 68-year-old, the amount of her consumption and the issued issue cannot be explained: “I live alone and there was no break. After a measurement in July 2024, consumption suddenly was normally from one day to another.
The responsible water association Aichfeld-murboden sees it differently: “We assume that the incident was very good. The person involved was also informed twice and contacted by us, but now denies this, “says De Water Association.
About two weeks ago, the corresponding water meter was picked up by the Water Association and set for an evaluation. It must now be read and checked.
Mayor gives hope
Harald Bergmann, mayor of the city of Knittelfeld, is confronted with the incident in a solution: “We know that this amount of water is unusable under normal circumstances.” At the moment it has to wait for the result of the water meter, but the incident must be discussed during the next council meeting.
“We want to find a solution. It will result in a treat, so that the person involved only has to pay the usual normal consumption, “says Bergmann. The pensioner gives hope.
