An eyewitness said dozens of civilians were killed in an attack in Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed Monday’s attack in the Oromia region on social media, but caused no casualties. “Most of the victims are women and children,” said eyewitness Abadu Hassen.
They killed everyone they could find,” said Hassen. The victims were mainly attributable to the Amharer ethnic group. Abiy Amed spoke in a tweet of a massacre, accusing the rebel group Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).
Similar incident two weeks ago
Just two weeks ago, a similar incident took place in the same region of Ethiopia, killing more than 100 people. The authorities also held the OLA responsible for this incident.
More autonomy and self-determination
Ethiopia considers OLA a terrorist group since it allied itself with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). OLA and TPLF are accused of destabilizing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. The OLA, a splinter group of the political party Oromo Liberation Front, calls for greater autonomy and self-determination for the Oromo people.
