Marmolada glacier will disappear in 30 years

Date:

The Marmolada Glacier is the largest glacier in the Dolomites and is located at the northern end of the Marmolada Group, where a tragic accident occurred on Sunday due to the global glacier melt. Now an expert is commenting on the glacier’s general retreat, predicting that the Marmolada Glacier will disappear within the next 30 years.

The collapsed Marmolada Glacier has killed seven so far. An additional 13 people are still believed to be missing. Glaciologist from the science museum MUSE in Trento, Christian Casarotto, commented on this accident and announced that the glacier will be gone in a maximum of 30 years. Only loose ice shelves remain.

The MUSE Museum keeps an eye on all the glaciers in Trentino. According to estimates, the Marmolada Glacier lost more than 85 percent of its volume between 1905 and 2010.

Alps as “Global Warming Hotspot”
Expert Christian Casarotto also told the Italian news agency ANSA: “The Alps are a hot spot of global warming and the trend of retreat can be seen in all glaciers, even the largest, which, however, respond more slowly to rising mountain temperatures.”

Experts suspect that the high temperatures of recent weeks were responsible for the glacier accident. On Sunday, a maximum temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius was reported at a measuring station at 2606 meters altitude. On June 20 it was even 17.7 degrees. A new temperature record of ten degrees was also recorded at the top of the Marmolada Glacier. The average temperature has been around seven degrees in recent years.
