In 2013 a vaccination program in Wales against the Belt Rose Pathogen (Herpes Zoster), which was not intended for people for more than 80 years. Thanks to this limitation, an international research team with participation from Vienna could have such a “natural experiment” and therefore provided new findings.
People with almost identical age – some birthdays were just a few days apart – were vaccinated or not. This formed the basis of a large -scale study in which it was analyzed whether the vaccination could have an impact on the risk of dementia.
The Stanford University team around Pascal figures resorted to data from around 280,000 people between the ages of 71 and 88, who had no dementia at the start of the study.
“Strong signal for the potential effect of vaccination”
The focus was on the slightly more than 80-year-olds, where it was shown: in the seven years after vaccination, about 20 percent fewer dementia diagnoses gained in the vaccinated people than with the non-vehicle. This is a strong signal for a potentially protective effect of vaccination, according to the researchers – especially since the groups are not statistically significantly differentiated in their health or education.
Alzheimer & Co.: Viruses can play an important role
The results support the theory that certain viruses, such as the Varicella zoster virus, that causes belts, can play a role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Even earlier studies indicated that vaccinations against herpes viruses could slow down the outbreak of dementia.

Women benefited more from vaccination
It is also remarkable that women seem to benefit particularly strongly from the protective effect of vaccination, which is associated with a generally stronger immune response.
So far it is not certain whether the observed effect is real prevention or only a delay at the start of the disease. It is also unclear whether the common “shingrix” vaccine – which is composed differently than the “ZosterVax” uses – shows similar effects at that time.
