Enthusiastic probes – More and more treasures are found with us

Date:

The recently discovered Roman artifacts in Rainbach in the Mühlk trip in Upper Austria are not the only rarity hiding in our soil. An archaeologist explains why special sensitivity is required for the probe.

You hardly believe which treasures are sleeping among us. A Roman bell and a pen, presumably a Robe Laad, found Siegfried Bauer (56) recently in Rainbach in the Mühlkreis (we reported).

More than 50 “treasures” registered
Hobby researchers are discovering more and more rarity in our state. In 2015, 15 finds from Upper Austria were reported to the Federal Monument Office, and in 2018 there were already 40 – and 2021, the last year where the records were completed, 52 “treasures” were reported. The most spectacular also came from Rainbach when a family met a family in the base of their farm on 6000 coins from the Late Middle Ages. The State Museum bought the silver rings for more than 10,000 euros.

The everywhere is important for science
No matter how tempting the hunt is, the hobby -like excavation is required. “It’s not just about the object, but about the context in which it was found. Was that a grave, are there still broken glass, are there still biological leftovers?” Jutta Leskovar, head of Primal and Early History in the Upper Austrian State Museum, says examples. This information is important for archaeologists to be able to do further research.

“If you make a hole in a green meadow and get a metal object, you get the context to be confused,” says Leskovar, who emphasizes: “There are many local researchers in our state who do valuable work.”
