Most people in Austria wounded themselves in the accidents with household accidents last year. There were leisure accidents in second place, such as figures from the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV). The working and school area and traffic accidents landed behind it.
A total of 804,500 people in Austria wounded themselves in the previous year. This is a slight increase of three percent. “There is a particularly sad development in children of zero and 14 years, because the number of injuries has increased considerably by five percent to nearly 122,000,” said KFV director Christian Schimanofsky. Most childhood injuries (41 percent) are available in the household, while among young people the leisure sector – including sports – usually leads to injuries.
In the case of older people, household accidents dominate again, including many traps in their own home.
In this way the accidents spread among areas last year.
3000 people died in the case of accidents
According to the board of directors, 92,100 people were injured in traffic accidents. More than 3000 people lost their lives. “The accident in Austria causes a lot of suffering every year, binds huge staff sources in hospitals and of course also increases social spending in many ways because medical treatments and rehabilitation measures are associated with high costs,” said Schimanofsky.
To better understand the causes of accidents and to develop countermeasures, more research projects are necessary. In the household, the KFV recommends better lighting, child safety, removing stumbling blocks such as cables and carpets, as well as the safe storage of cleaning agents.
High financial risk
The private insurers recently offered benefits of 840 million euros per year in accident insurance. Precy accident is not the responsibility of the legal accident insurance institutions. This means that the injuries are taken care of, but there is no service with permanent handicap or for professional retraining, said Ralph Müller of the Austrian insurance association VVö.
