Germany was no longer the most important destination for asylum seekers in the EU in February. Our neighboring country was entangled by France (13,080 applications) and Spain (12,975 applications), as the new statistics of the federal office for migration and refugees demonstrate.
During 2024, Germany still applied for Spain and France with 250,615 requests. So far there is no international comparison for March. In March 2025, fewer asylum applications were made in Germany than in February (minus 19.7 percent) and March 2024 (decrease of 45.3 percent).
The falling figures have to do with the fact that the asylum applications of people from the three most important countries of origin go back to Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey. The asylum rules were tightened at the end of the previous year. For example, deportations to Afghanistan were resumed, which were suspended because of the uncertain location and the takeover of the Taliban in 2021.
