The low temperatures have led to a delay due to the local asparagus harvest. From mid -April, the Austrian asparagus should then be available across the board in the supermarkets, as the Room of Agriculture announced Tuesday.
Exactly when it will be so far, will depend on the weather in the coming days. In short, the vegetables must last the soil temperatures of more than ten degrees to grow well. “Only a few direct marketing companies that adhere in particular asparagus offer small quantities on Tuesday,” said Chamber of Agriculture President Josef Moosbrugger.
Imported asparagus, available in supermarkets, was less fresh and was generated under worse production and social standards. “It is therefore worth waiting for the Austrian harvest.” Last year the domestic vegetables were already on the market at the beginning of April.
Lower harvest is expected
In Germany, asparagus is mainly grown in Marchfeld in Lower Austria. In the previous year, white asparagus was mainly grown, followed by green asparagus. 2723 tons was harvested, this year this is expected with a slightly lower amount.
“One of the biggest challenges for farmers are the increased production costs. In particular, the higher wage costs lead to mass disruptions and disadvantages for asparagus producers and for their workforce and therefore for security of delivery (…),” said Mosbrugger in a broadcast.
