Austrian premiere – Leoben manages trees with software

Date:

According to its own statements, Leoben will be the first city in Austria to manage its tree population using software. With this, the second largest city in Styria wants to save time and money when capturing the approximately 3,000 trees in the city center. The project will initially run until 2026.

The tree population is collected in a database using drones, mobile laser scanners and highly sensitive cameras. This database makes it possible to digitally analyze each tree and its immediate environment, enabling various health and safety checks and user-defined measurements to be performed. For example, it can be used to determine the amount of carbon dioxide that each tree stores. In addition, it can be used to query how many degrees Celsius a park with trees cools the adjacent area.

The Greehill company, which provides the software for Leoben, was founded in 2017 by Gabor Goertz and Gyula Fekete as a research and development project for the Singapore National Park to facilitate Singapore as a “green city” in forest management. In 2020 Greehill received the World Summit on the Information Society, a United Nations world summit on information and communication, for achieving the use of digital methods to capture trees.

Numerous city councils, including Berlin, Budapest and Barcelona, now use the Greehill software. “Leoben joins a number of prominent cities with the digital tree survey,” said Mayor Kurt Wallner (SPÖ).

“A noticeable improvement in citizens’ health and well-being”
“The Greehill database and the extensive know-how behind it help us analyze and manage the urban tree population to noticeably improve the health and well-being of the inhabitants of Leoben,” said Wallner. This can save time and money compared to conventional – often incomplete – tree surveys.

However, specific information about the level of savings can only be given after an initial evaluation.
