A whole family was wiped out in just a few seconds on Thursday. The last photo of Siemens manager Augustin Escobar with his wife and three children shows how much the five looked forward to their helicopter excursion in New York. Why the machine crashed is still a big mystery.
The photo was taken shortly before the helicopter left. The family of five was very excited to see the New York skyline with its impressive skyscrapers from a bird’s eye view. But only shortly after admission the tragedy took place: the helicopter broke apart in the air and fell into the Hudson River.
Child died of his birthday
The tourists and the pilot died. The victims are Agustin Escobar (49), who has been president and CEO of the German Global Corporation Siemens in Spain since 2022, his wife and children for four, five and eleven years old. Especially tragic: as Spanish media reported, one of the children had her birthday just that day when the helicopter crashed.
Helicopter flew the popular tourist route
The helicopter started at 2.59 p.m. In foggy weather from the Heliport on Wall Street and followed a popular sightseeing route: he circled the statue of freedom, slid to the north along the Hudson river in the direction of George Washington Bridge and then turned to the south to fly along the coast of New Jersey, as CNN reported. The helicopter was on the way back when the accident happened. About 17 minutes after the start, the pilot had just completed a U -Turn above George Washington Bridge when the machine started.
Two children died alone in the hospital
Witnesses reported that a rotor leaf was thrown away and the helicopter broke in two parts before he fell into the floods of the river. “The helicopter tilted somewhat down and I saw the propeller loosening from the helicopter,” Sarah Jane Raymond Ryer described the dramatic moments. Four of the victims immediately died after they were pulled out of the water. Two children were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
Photos of the scene of the accident: The helicopter had to be restored by Crane:
Windlagen from 40 km/h during accident
The visibility would have been 16 kilometers at the time of the accident. However, it was cloudy, with wind speeds from 16 to 24 km/h and gusts of wind up to 40 km/h. The majority of the wreck could already be found from the river, further diving inserts were announced before Friday.
“We are deeply sad about the tragic helicopter crash, in which Agustin Escobar and his family died. Our deeply felt participation applies to all their family members,” a spokesperson for Siemens Mobility to CNN. Escobar worked as a CEO for the railway infrastructure of this division – this offers transport solutions. “Our deep sympathy applies to the families of those who were on board,” said mayor Eric Adams from New York and spoke about “an unimaginable tragedy”.
