Hungary’s prime minister, the far-right Viktor Orbán, 58, has declared himself the winner of parliamentary elections held this Sunday, in which he won a fourth consecutive term by a large margin.

“We have won a huge victory,” Orbán told thousands of supporters who chanted his name. “A victory that may be seen from the moon, but certainly also from Brussels,” he added, criticizing the European Commission, which recently opened a dossier on the Hungarian law banning talking about homosexuality with minors.

The Prime Minister’s formation, the Fidesz, clearly leads the tally of the parliamentary elections this Sunday with 54% of the vote counted.

If Orbán and his party, Fidesz, maintain the trend of control, he could even reassert his two-thirds absolute majority, which he has held in power since 2010.

Forecasts indicate that the ruling party could control more than 133 seats out of 199 in total, while the opposition “United for Hungary” coalition could have 58.

The opposition, which brings together six formations of different ideologies, failed to live up to expectations with 33% of the vote.

Analysts say the war in neighboring Ukraine has benefited Orbán, who has presented himself to voters as the guarantor of stability in turbulent times.

One of the surprises of the election was also the result of the far-right party “Nuestra Patria”, which has crossed the 5% threshold and could add at least 5 seats.

“Conservative, patriotic politics has won, and our message is that this represents not the past, but the future,” he said.
