The public electric charging stations of Burgenland Energie were manipulated in the Parndorf Outlet Center. Criminals used a false QR code for their attempt at rise, which they glued over the civil servant. The goal: the account data of the customers.
Charging electric cars is anything but a uniform process – there are different providers, different rates and above all: different payment options. The most popular and safest method is the charging card. Fraud took place in the Public Charging Stations of Burgenland Energie in the Parndorf Outlet Center.
Criminals have manipulated QR codes that lead to a deceptively real website. After the message: “Unfortunately, a problem occurred”, customers were forwarded to the correct “direct payment” page of Burgenland Energie. Credit card details were therefore accessible, although the customer could load without problems.
“Quishing” used for the first time in Burgenland
The police spoke about “quice” at this fraud, which was used for the first time in Burgenland. Frauders lead their victims with manipulated QR codes to fake websites to get credit card details. “Thanks to the rapid response from an employee, the attempted fraud was immediately tried,” said Burgenland Energie. The number of victims is low, the charging stations have now been checked.
