The university library in Graz is the home of the oldest book clip in the world since a sensational find two years ago. The history of the book has been rewritten – and caused assessments of the shares in large libraries around the world. The discoverer explains how the “mummy book” smells and why it stays dirty.
Restorer Theresa Zammit Lupi will not forget the 11 May 2023. The Maltese resident has been working in the Graz University Library since 2021 and was busy with routine work on a papyrus fragment that day when she noticed something unusual: “There was a small thread of the document, which was unusual. When I got a closer look at the papyrus.” All this indicated that the loose piece of Papyrus was once bound with the wire in book form – a sensation! The papyrus fragment dates from around 260 BC. And is therefore approximately 400 years older than the oldest previously known proof of a book form.
