In 2024, new armed conflicts and natural disasters led to a record for the internal displaced people – that is, people who had to resort to their own country elsewhere in their own country. According to the observation center for internal displaced persons (IDMC) located in Geneva, the number of movements of natural disasters was nowhere as high as in the US.
The number of internal displaced persons worldwide was 83.4 million at the end of the year, as the Observation Center reported. This is more than twice as much as six years earlier and almost ten percent more than 2023. Almost 90 percent of people fled and fight against violence. The observation center mentions the Democratic Republic of Congo, the occupied Palestinian territories and the Sudan. In the Gaza Strip, where citizens had to flee several times, almost the entire civilian population was sold at the end of the previous year.
Two -thirds of the ‘new displaced’ victims of natural disasters
In total, the observation center had 65.8 million new journeys for the past year. A good third of them were due to natural disasters – also a record number.
The United States is ahead of the natural disasters. The Hurricanes “Helene” and “Milton” have led to eleven million journeys, among other things. Within a year these were as many as in no country since the start of the 2008 records.
UNHCR: More than 122 million displaced people worldwide
The Swiss researchers focus on people who have stayed in their own country, ie domestic people. In general, wars, conflicts or disasters must leave their homes. Many flee the boundaries to other countries and are not counted for these statistics. In mid-2024, the UN Refugee High Commission (UNHCR) already spoke about 122.6 million displaced people worldwide in their homes and other countries.
