A young American has been brain dead for more than 90 days, but the doctors have to keep Adriana Smith alive against the will of her family. The reason for this is the strict abortion laws of the state of Georgia.
“It’s difficult for me. I see my daughter breathing, but she is not there,” said the patient’s mother, April Newkirk, the stressful situation. Adriana is visited by her family every day in the hospital.
The son of the brain-dead patient also regularly visits his mother in the hospital-de grandma, the boy tells that the 30-year-old is sleeping alone. These visits are “heartbreaking,” said Newkirk.

Mother: “Death could have been prevented”
In the ninth week of pregnancy, Adriana suffered from severe headache – the pain was so extreme that she went to the hospital. The symptoms were strong enough “to know that something is wrong,” said the mother of the pregnant woman. “You have given your medication, but did not do tests and no CT scan,” she explains. Then she was sent home. “If they had done the tests or they had held at night, they would have noticed it. It could have been prevented,” Newkirk complains.
The next morning, the 30-year-old snarled and gorging-her-her friend named the salvation that brought her to the hospital. With a CT scan, different blood clots were eventually discovered in Adriana’s brain. An operation came too late – the young woman suffered a brain death.
Brain death is not considered a medical emergency
In Georgia, an abortion is legally prohibited after the sixth week of pregnancy since 2022. It can only be performed if there is a medical emergency and the life of women can be saved by an abortion. The current case is a gray area: brain death is not considered a medical emergency for the mother. The doctors must therefore keep the woman alive until the fetus is born viable. The family has no control.
