LDP win big after Shinzo Abe .’s death

The party won 63 seats, its best election result since 2013. Together with its partner, the Buddhist Komeito party, the LDP retains a large majority in the legislature.

the current ruler Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) took a big win in Japan’s last partial parliamentary election, electoral data released by public broadcaster NHK shows. Shinzo Abe, the former Japanese prime minister who died last Friday, belonged to the PLD.

The PLD has obtained 63 seats to the Senate of the national parliament in the elections that took place this Sunday. The seats won in favor of current Prime Minister Fumio Kishidason were more than half of the 125 at stake. These are the PLD’s best election results since 2013.

In this way, the PLD, together with its coalition partner, maintains a vast majority of 146 seats in the legislative body of 248 members. Its partner, the Buddhist Komeito party, has won 13 seats.

The second most voted political force was the opposition Democratic Constitutional Party with 17 seats, six less than in the previous election.

The turnout in these elections is estimated at more than 52%according to the calculations of the main national media, compared to 48.8% of the elections three years ago.
