Almost 16 years after a train accident in the Tuscan coastal town of Vireggio, in which 32 people died, a court of appeal in Florence confirmed the serious penalties for 13, including two Austrian managers, on Tuesday.
In January 2024, the Supreme Court in Rome confirmed the fines of the second instance for the suspect in 2022, but a new professional process was ordered in Florence.

It was only about the punitive circumstances granted to the suspect, including former railway chief Mauro Moretti. The ex-boss of the Vienna-based company GmbH owner of the Kessel-Wagons, which was established in Vienna, derailed and exploded in Vireggio-WAs sentenced to five years and four months in 2022. The manager responsible for the fleet of the Gatx Rail Austrian trains received at the time of the prison. Both penalties were confirmed on Tuesday.
Several family members of the victims appeared in Florence, who fought since the accident to clarify the cause of the disaster. They declared herself satisfied with the judgment.
Accident took place in June 2009
The suspect, including some German railway managers, had to be responsible for, among other things, negligent murder and activating a fire disorder. Some of them were also accused of violating security regulations. Moretti, former head of the Italian State Railways (FS), was sentenced to five years in prison. The two Austrians can still submit an objection to the punishment at the Supreme Court in Rome.
1000 people evacuated
On 29 June 2009, the freight train in the immediate vicinity of the Vievreggio train station was derailed, after which one of the gas -filled Gaspotlood -Aggones exploded. The explosion and the subsequent major fire caused serious damage in the center of the city. About 1000 people had to be brought to safety. Houses collapsed, cars went up in flames. The cause of the accident may have been a crack on a bicycle. It was the most difficult railway accident in Italy for more than 20 years.
