Debate heats up – gas pipeline shut down: nuclear dispute flares up

Date:

With the shutdown of the “Nord Stream1” gas pipeline from Russia, the discussion about expanding nuclear power is becoming increasingly heated in Germany.

“It is a real mess ahead of us this winter. And my feeling and my concern is that the gravity of the situation has not reached everyone yet,” CSU chief Markus Söder warned, probably pointing the nuclear-critical Greens. And the vice-chairman of the FPD Lukas Köhler is also warming demand.

In view of the feared gas shortage, an ideological discussion must be held about whether the nuclear power plants that are still in operation should be extended to get through the winter. As is well known, Germany wants to phase out nuclear energy completely by the end of the year.

This makes Söder even clearer: “It makes no sense to switch off the electricity for ten million households, which is supplied by the three nuclear power plants that are still in operation.” In the same breath, the Bavarian Prime Minister criticized the “purely ideologically motivated rejection” by the Greens.

In the person of Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, they oppose Söder’s initiative: “A small contribution to the energy supply is offset by high security risks.” Her party friend, Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck, also shares this opinion. Both have the operators on their side, who refuse to continue working.
