He is probably the most hated prisoner in Germany – now he is talking. Christian B., main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, breaks his silence. In an interview with RTL, he talks about isolation, violence – and what he looks forward to freedom. But for the Maddie case: not a word.
It is an interview that allows the whole of Europe to dedicate it. Christian B. (48), who is considered the most important suspect in the missing person in the Maddie McCann, speaks for the first time from detention. After months of contact with RTL reporter Ulrich Oppold, a meeting took place in the Sehnde Correctional Facility in February.
B. is currently in prison because of the rape of a 72-year-old American-a crime that he continues to deny. “As I told you, the most important thing for me is that I have been in custody that I could not have committed for many years,” he wrote beforehand.
No friends, no visitors, hardly a face
The photos from prison pull the image of a man who looks broken – and yet wants to keep control. According to Oppold, B. lives in voluntary insulation. For fear of attacks, he avoids courts and prison. He was recently attacked by a colleague prisoner and suffering from a broken rib. He only speaks a few words a day – and according to his own statements, his facial expressions slowly lose.
He also has no friends – neither inside nor outside. “I felt that a man is sitting in front of me who is not aware of any debt,” said Oppold after the conversation.
Christian B. already has plans for freedom
Although traces are searched again in Portugal (even in old sewers this time), Christian B. seems to be preparing for the day of his release – probably in September. If until that time no indictment in the Madeleine McCann case is increased, he must leave the prison.
But what then? The 48-year-old already has concrete plans. They must be easy: a steak, a beer – and then disappear. His lawyer Philipp Marquort continues and openly says what would be logical for him in this situation: “I would leave Europe and go to Suriname.” But the escape to the small state on the northeast coast of South America would not be enough for him. He would even reach the utmost: “I would be operated on my face so that nobody recognizes me.”
His lawyers believe in a media prejudices. However, the judiciary remains convinced: Maddie is dead – and B. guilty. Researchers found children’s clothing, hard drives and even texts on a hiding place to show his obsession with children. But whether Christian B. really comes to court or at least is in the hands of the judiciary.
