Experts for sure: – mountaineering will change considerably in the future

Date:

Due to climate change, the snow before winter sports melts there and the potential snowms are less. The outdoor season in the summer is getting longer, but the load is increasing due to higher temperatures. Experts rely on sports and tourism to take on the challenge of climate change.

According to the third position paper of the experts on the forums “clima.sport.schnee” the effects will be felt, especially in the field of mountain sports. The Expert Forum consists of 14 climate and sports research facilities from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. According to the current calculations, the average warming has been 3.1 degrees in Austria by the end of 2024, 2.5 degrees in Germany and 2.9 degrees Celsius in Switzerland.

The experts expect that the annual average temperature in the roof space will increase by at least two degrees despite the end of the century. In the short and medium term, fluctuations can reinforce and weaken both the long -term climate trend.

More precipitation, but less snow
“Heating has a significant impact on winter,” says Marc Olefs, head of the Climate Sequence Research department in Geosphere Austria and representative of the organization at the Expert Forum. The natural snow cover that is suitable for snow sports continues to decrease in the long term, especially in deep and medium -sized layers, up to around 1500 meters above sea level. “Global warming also changes the meteorological framework for technical snow production. The potential snow suits are less and the need for water and energy is increasing,” says Olefs.

When it comes to winting, the natural variability is particularly high and no clear trends cannot be observed in many places. There are, however, robust signals for increasing the wins in the Alpine area and the intensification of short -term prelimination -extras. In deep and medium -sized layers, however, it will rain more than the higher temperatures instead of snowing.

Longer season, but more heavy rain
For the first time, the new position paper also contains the subject of mountain sports in the summer six months. In the transitional seasons of spring and autumn, climate change contributes to a seasonal extension of many outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, baths, water sports and golf. In the summer, however, the tension increases due to the rising temperatures.

As far as the rain is concerned, there are two developments according to experts: according to climate researchers, climate scenarios would have a tendency to lower rainfall in the Alpine region and to be more intensive dryness periods in the summer six months. At the same time, however, it is to be expected that small and short -term heavy strikes will continue to intensify in the summer half of the year.

Appeal to Sports and Tourism sector
“Climate change is a major challenge. It is in the interest of winter and the long -term mountain sports that sustainability, climate protection and increase in resilience are promoted at all levels and synergistically,” says Ralf Roth, the initiator of the Kluma.sport Expert Forum.

He kept the entire industry – from cable operators to sports retailers – to “actively participate in the Social Challenge change with appropriate measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the consequences.” The experts also recommend further research, including for the development of precipitation.
