Snow on the Glockner – Early Summer – and Resting on Eagle are scored

Date:

The Adlersruhe on the Großglockner starts on Friday in the Mountain Summer. But before the season can start, the hut -guestheer and his team still have to free snow. The “Kroon” stopped at the Archduke Johann Hut.

When others in the valley jump into the valley in the early summer, Toni Riepler and his friend Peter Fuetsch unpack the snow kick for the first time on the Großglockner. Because although many will be reminded by many last winter because of the low amounts of snow, the situation in the high mountains of the Hohe Tauern looks completely different.

Record -Breaking Rainfall
“I have never seen such large snow and ice masses around the hut in June,” says Toni, the famous Glockner Mountain Guide, Mountain Rescue and old host of the Archdow-Johann-Hütte.

The explanation for the many snow is fairly simple: while it was raining in the valley in April and May, it snowed more than 3000 meters …

For Toni and his friend Peter Fuetsch, the annual freedom of the protective building, the highest hiding place in Austria at 3454 meters, has long become the annual sweaty ritual.

Exhaustive work before the start of the season
With spades, pimples, snow blower and a lot of muscle strength, Peter and Toni need almost two weeks to free the eagle support from the snow masses that are crowned as the basis of an eagle over a rocky lead under the Großglockner. “First of all, we had to expose the hut door, or rather, to create ourselves,” laughs Peter. Scoop, ground and picked, as well as in every weather, with or without a view of the Großglockner. Peter: “It’s really tiring.”

In the meantime, Toni and Peter have made it again and the Archduke Johann-Hütte-Die, incidentally, belongs to the legendary Austrian Alpine Club (Öak). Without the use of Toni and Peter there is no neighborhoods and no food for Alpinists, because the Glockner season has started for a long time and the Archdow Johann Hut will also be open from Friday.

The hut itself is one of the most iconic huts in the Alps. High Alpine, historical and spectacular, it is the only protective hut in the Öak and has been offering a neighborhood since 1880.
